1.In view of the growing need for the international community to render support to Syria, where the humanitarian situation is worsening, the government of the Republic of Korea has decided to provide the country with US$600,000, in addition to the previously pledged $1 million, in humanitarian assistance.
- As of September 11, the number of the Syrian refugees registered with the Office of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) stood at 85,000 in Jordan; 78,000 in Turkey; 67,000 in Lebanon; 23,000 in Iraq; and some 1.2 million in Syria.
2.The additional aid will be provided to Jordan and Lebanon, both of which face difficulties caused by the massive influx of Syrian refugees, mainly for relief operations for Syrian refugees in those countries.
3.The US$1 million, which the ROK government had pledged to offer at the Meeting of the Friends of Syria Group in April, will be provided through five international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Office of the UNHCR. Out of this amount, US$300,000 will be channeled into relief operations for Syrian refugees in Turkey.
